Spooky Karaoke Round Three: 5 Halloween Songs From Drink & Draw

Spooky Karaoke is officially a tradition now. Round one was the Oct 8 Spooky Karaoke setlist, round two was four more Halloween songs on Oct 15, and on Thursday, October 22, I came back with five more. This time the setlist ran from a 1958 monster movie theme all the way to a full Vincent Price rap, with my co-host Erdwick in charge of picking the running order for the back half of the night.

The Blob, The Five Blobs

I opened with the theme from the 1958 movie The Blob, because nothing says spooky season like a cheerful little doo-wop song about a gelatinous monster eating a small town. Chat got it right away: "THIS IS AWESOME! The theme from The Blob," plus a well-deserved shout-out to Steve McQueen.

Erdwick's official review of the film: "The Blob was a good movie." Short, sweet, correct.

I Put a Spell on You, Screamin' Jay Hawkins

This one is a weird song, and I mean that as the highest compliment. The only way to do it is to go all in, so I did.

Afterward Erdwick remembered that Marilyn Manson recorded a version of it too. For the record, mine was not the Manson version. It was pure Screamin' Jay energy. Chat also asked if I'd done Witchy Woman yet. I haven't, so consider it on the list for next week.

Thriller, Michael Jackson

Before Thriller, chat and I got into a whole conversation about vocal range. The short version: the really high, girly notes are where I have to put on a character, but the low end is home. I have a deep sultry voice, and it is what it is. So of course the next pick was a song that ends with a monologue from Vincent Price.

Yes, I did the whole rap. "The funk of forty thousand years" and all. Chat's verdict was that Erdie should do the Thriller dance next time. No promises from him, but I'm keeping that request on file.

Zombie, The Cranberries

Before this one I asked chat to guess a Halloween song with a one-word title. The guesses rolled in: "Ghost," "Monster," a whole parade of spooky words. Nobody got it, and honestly, I am shocked you didn't guess this.

This one was a tribute to Dolores O'Riordan. I miss that lady so much, and I was afraid that song would make me cry. Her voice on Zombie is one of a kind, and singing it felt like a little thank you to her. If you love this song too, go put on the original after this. She deserves the extra listen.

Somebody's Watching Me, Rockwell

To end on a high note, I closed the night with Rockwell's paranoid party classic. Fun bonus for this setlist: that's Michael Jackson singing the famous chorus on the original, so Thriller got a sneaky little encore.

Near the end of the night, chat dropped "it is SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE actually watching you sing these songs," which made my whole night. I might look goofy on camera, but having this much fun is the point.

Vote on the songs for next week

Next week, chat gets to vote on which songs from the past few weeks I sing again, and I'm adding a few new spooky picks to the playlist too. Cemetery Gates by Pantera already came up as a contender, and I love that song. Witchy Woman is on the table too.
