Speculative Worlds as Method: Saya Woolfalk at the Bronx Museum

Saya Woolfalk does not just invent worlds. She builds methods for living inside them. At the Bronx Museum, *Saya Woolfalk: The WoodsWoman Method* opens October 9, 2026 and runs through March 28, 2027 (the museum also describes the run as continuing through winter 2027). The free opening celebration is Friday, October 9, 6:00 to 8:00 pm, for all ages, with optional RSVP and drop-ins welcome. Exhibition as laboratory This is the first chapter of a multi-year initiative. Woolfalk completed the museum’s AIM Fellowship in 2009, so this is also a homecoming with teeth. For *The WoodsWoman Method*, she applies the lens of her WoodsWoman project to the museum’s permanent collection, selecting works that explore speculative worlds, the cosmos, relationships between humans and nature, and collective storytelling as community-building. Process materials sit beside those collection choices. Workshops with the museum’s Education Department are part of the package. The show is designed to function as both exhibition and laboratory, and it will inform Woolfalk’s commissioned inaugural installation for the museum’s renovated main lobby, supported by VIA Art Fund. Curatorial collaboration credit goes to Eileen Jeng Lynch, Director of Curatorial Programs, with support from Summer 2026 Curatorial Intern Karthik Tambar. Who Woolfalk is (quick community briefing) Woolfalk (born Japan, 1979) is a New York-based artist who uses science fiction and fantasy to reimagine the world in multiple dimensions. Projects such as *No Place*, *The Empathics*, and *ChimaTEK* build the ongoing narrative of the Empathics, a fictional race of women who can alter their genetic makeup and fuse with plants. Utopian possibility, cultural hybridity, and playful seriousness are her native weather. Why Art Life cares Speculative worldbuilding is not only for novels and games. Museums can do it too, especially when an artist invites the collection to talk back. If you are in New York for fall openings or NYCC-adjacent wanderings, this Bronx stop is a reminder that “method” can be as glamorous as “masterpiece.” Bring a friend who loves sci-fi and a friend who loves community workshops. They will both leave happy. Primary sources: Bronx Museum exhibition page, opening celebration page
