Kusama After Kusama: Infinity as Tribute at the Stedelijk

Infinity rooms hit different when they are also memorials. At the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the big Yayoi Kusama retrospective is open from September 11, 2026 through January 17, 2027. The museum frames it as a landmark survey of more than seven decades of work across painting, sculpture, installations, drawing, fashion, collage, happenings, and more. And then comes the part that stops your scroll: with the utmost respect, the Stedelijk says the show has now become a posthumous tribute celebrating Kusama’s life and work. That is a lot to hold in one sentence. Polka dots, mirrors, self-obliteration, and now tribute. Same artist, same visual language, new emotional register. What the show actually covers Kusama started in Japan in the early 1950s, then became a key New York avant-garde figure in the 1960s. The Stedelijk traces that sweep from Matsumoto through New York to later Tokyo production. Alongside iconic pieces, the museum promises historic works never before shown in Europe, plus new works made for this occasion. One highlight called out on the exhibition page is a specially created new version of her iconic Infinity Mirrored Room installations. The Amsterdam presentation sits in a three-museum collaboration with Fondation Beyeler in Basel (October 12, 2025 to January 25, 2026) and Museum Ludwig in Cologne (March 14, 2026 to August 2, 2026). Curator credit goes to Leontine Coelewij. So if you caught an earlier stop, Amsterdam is not a carbon copy. The Stedelijk FAQ notes that the presentation has its own route through the building. Practical bits for travelers (and daydreamers) Tickets need a start time for the Kusama exhibition. Museum hours during the show are listed as daily 10 am to 6 pm, with a last start time around 4:45 pm depending on which FAQ page you read. There is a surcharge for the Kusama ticket tier; adults for museum plus Kusama are listed at €32.50 on the cost FAQ. Book ahead. Infinity queues are real. Why this matters for Art Life readers Kusama’s work has always been about dissolving the boundary between you and everything else. A posthumous retrospective keeps that invitation open while changing the weather around it. You are not just stepping into dots. You are stepping into a long career that outlived its own myths and is now being celebrated as legacy in real time. If you are anywhere near Museumplein this fall or winter, this is the pilgrimage. If you are not, keep an eye on the installation photography and the way museums speak about tribute versus survey. Language matters when infinity becomes remembrance.
